Take advantage of a 3-4 day tramp along the Matemateaonga Range at your own pace taking into account the magnificent views of Mt Ruapehu in the far distant bush clad hills, farmlands and lowland forests of the Waimarino. In 1911, a road along the range began, this was to create a more direct link with Raetihi and the main trunk railway. This road was followed up, widened and secured and was named “The Whakaihuwaka Road”. With the outbreak of the first world war, the men involved were called to arms, the then Whakaihuwaka road was abandoned and the track eventually became overgrown.
This track has 4 good huts and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Knowledge and Experience
Ken Haworth at Whanganui River Adventures has walked the track many a time for pleasure and also whilst working for the Department of Conservation clearing windfalls along the track.
He will be more than able to answer any questions you may have about the track.
